Helsinki  Cathedral The Cathedral of Helsinki (Helsingin tuomiokirkko) is the most recognizable building in the city, one of the main attractions of the Helsinki. The Cathedral is located in the city center, on the northern edge of the Senate Square. This is the main church of the diocese of Helsinki Evangelical Lutheran Church of Finland. It is distinctive landmark in the Helsinki cityscape, with its tall, green dome surrounded by four smaller domes.

The cathedral was built in the 1830-1852 years by the famous architect Carl Ludvig Engel. Engel started the design of the cathedral in 1818. In the process, in the project was been made a lot of changes. Emperor Nikolay I watched for the project himself. In 1839 the emperor ordered to build the famous broad stairway in front of the cathedral (the architect was against it). The temple was inaugurated on February 15, 1852. It was dedicated to St. Nicholas (the heavenly patron of the reigning emperor Nikolay I). Annually church visit more than 350 000 people, most of whom are tourists.
