There are many ancient streets, which give an idea of how people lived in the Middle Ages, in the Old Town of Tallinn. Among them best known are two streets: “Luhike Jalg” street (short leg) and “Pikk jalg” street (long leg). They led from the “Lower town” to the “Upper town”. For a long time, these streets only connect two parts of the old city.
The length of the “Luhike Jalg” street is 95 meters. For convenience the rise to the Toomplea hill there is a staircase. Preserved to our time tower separates the “Upper town” (where the aristocrats lived) from the “Lower town” (here lived merchants and artisans). An interesting fact: gate that separated the two parts of the city, were locked from the “Lower City”. It can be concluded that merchants and artisans feared of their powerful neighbors. But also residents the Upper Town had some dependence on the lower city residents.
