United Kingdom tourism statistics 2012

Tourism is one of the most important sectors of the economy of many countries. Most countries are trying to attract more tourists. For what purpose they do it? The main purpose of any country is to get as much money from visiting the country tourists, to provide jobs and sources of income for its citizens and to supplement the budget. Britain is one of the most popular tourist destinations of the world. On this page are statistics 2012 (the number of tourists, the number of nights spent in the UK and the amount of money spent by tourists).

2012 was a special one for the UK. United Kingdom held the Olympic Games and Paralympics Games, as well as the anniversary of the Queen in that year. These events attracted to the UK additional number of tourists.

  • The number of foreign tourists visiting UK in 2012 increased by 0.9% (compared with 2011).
  • Revenue from tourists coming to the UK amounted to approximately 18.6 billion pounds (+ 0.6 billion, 3.6%).
  • Approximately 471 thousand foreign tourists came to the UK to attend the Olympic Games / Paralympic Games in 2012.
  • Number of tourists from China (including Taiwan) increased by 34,000 persons.
  • 90% of travelers organizing their trip themselves (buying tickets, hotel reservations, travel planning).

In 2012, the UK was visited 31,084 million foreign tourists, who spent in the UK 230.2 million nights and spent in the UK 18,640 million pounds sterling. The number of tourists (thousands) by region: North America - 3544, Europe - 22796, other countries - 4744.

To travel to the UK foreign tourists used the following types of transport: air transport - 22,670 thousand tourists (73%), railway (via the channel under the Channel Strait, Eurotunnel) - 4 157 thousand (14%), sea transport - 4,257 thousand people. Most tourists come to the UK in the period from June to September.

The most visited by foreign tourists regions of the UK:

  • London - 15461 thousand people.
  • England (excluding London) - 12,846,000 people.
  • Scotland - 2,225,000 people.
  • Wales - 854 thousand people.

Tourists from what countries most often come to the UK?

According to statistics, in 2012 the first three places are occupied by France (3,787,000 persons, 12.2%), Germany (2.967 million people, 9.5%) and the USA (2.84 million people, 9.1%). At the same time tourists from the United States spends in the UK the most money. They bring the UK about the same money as tourists from France and Germany together.

UK residents made in 2012 about 56 538 000 trips abroad, in foreign hotels spent 584.2 million nights spent during trips abroad 32 450 million pounds sterling.
