Peter and Paul Fortress   St. Petersburg Museum of history of Saint Petersburg is one of the most visited museums in the city. This is one of Russia's largest historical museums. Museum exhibits tell about the history of St. Petersburg from the city foundation to the present day. The museum is located on the territory of the Peter and Paul Fortress, which is one of the main attractions of Saint Petersburg. Peter and Paul Fortress are visiting almost all tourists in St. Petersburg. Entrance to the Peter and Paul Fortress is free.

Peter and Paul Fortress is the historic center of St. Petersburg. The buildings of the fortress housed the main museum exhibitions. The fortress itself and located on its territory buildings can be considered as the main exhibits of the museum.

Peter and Paul Fortress were founded May 27, 1703. This day is considered as St. Petersburg foundation day. The fortress is located on a small island (Rabbit Island), not far from place the river flows into the Baltic Sea. In 1954, the fortress and buildings belonging to it were transferred to the State Museum of the History of Leningrad (later St. Petersburg). Main and temporary exhibitions of the museum are located in fortress buildings.

"History of St. Petersburg - Petrograd 1703-1918" exposition is located in the fortress Commandant's House. Exposition is devoted to the history of the city from its inception until the early 20th century. You can see the objects found during archaeological excavations on the banks of the Neva River here. Museum items give an idea of the construction of St. Petersburg and life in the capital of the Russian Empire in the 19th century. Museum of the History of St. Petersburg exposition devoted to various topics: trade, banking, transportation, clothing, kitchen and other topics.

There is a viewing platform on the wall of the fortress (the Neva panorama), overlooking the Neva River (entrance fee).

The most notable building in the territory of the fortress is the Peter and Paul Cathedral (Cathedral of the Holy Apostles Peter and Paul). Cathedral construction begun on May 30, 1712. It was built until 1732. Cathedral is connected to burial vault in which are buried many members of the Imperial House of Romanov. Here is buried the founder of St Petersburg, the great Russian Emperor Peter I.

Museum of the History of St. Petersburg has several branches: Rumyantsev Mansion on the Promenade des Anglais, poet A. Blok Apartment Museum, Sergei Kirov Museum, Monument to the Heroic Defenders of Leningrad in Victory Square, Museum of Printing and Oreshek Fortress.
