Barcelona Airport

Most tourists arrive in Barcelona by plane. The international airport of Barcelona, Aeroport de Barcelona - el Prat, is located about 12 kilometers south-west of the city center. It is the largest airport in Catalonia and the second largest passenger in Spain.

The El Prat airfield was opened in 1918. In 2016, 44.1 million passengers were served at the airport.

At the moment, there are two terminals (T1 and T2) operating at the airport. Terminal 1 was put into operation in 2009. The terminal has an area of 548,000 sq.m. and is the fifth in the world in size.
Terminal 2 is divided into three sections, 2A, 2B and 2C. The oldest part of the terminal was opened in 1968. The terminal was expanded in 1992 for the Summer Olympic Games. The distance between the terminals (in a straight line) is 1.5 kilometers. Passengers can move between terminals on a free shuttle (bus).

Passengers can get from the airport to the city center (and from Barcelona to the airport) using various modes of transport: bus, metro, railway and taxi.

Taxi

It may be inconvenient or impossible to use public transport if you have a large suitcase, a few suitcases or other large luggage with you.

Bus

Route 46 bus runs to the airport from Plaza España. It is the cheapest way to get to (from) Barcelona airport.
Aerobús bus operates direct routs between the T1 and T2 terminals and the city center (Plaça Catalunya).
Night buses N17 and N16 go to Barcelona airport from Plaza Catalunya. Night bus N17 follows from Plaza Catalunya to terminal 1. Night bus N16 goes to terminals 2A, 2B and 2C. (The stop is located at the junction of Ronda Universitat and Plaça Catalunya streets.)
The airport also has a bus connection with the nearest airports (Reus Airport and Girona-Costa Brava) and other cities.

Metro

There are metro stations on both terminals of the airport. Line 9 began operating at the airport from 12 February 2016. The L9 Sud metro line connects the Barcelona-El Prat airport with Zona Universitària. You can reach the city center or to any station by metro. You can easily find the station by following the signs. Terminal 2 metro station is located next to the railway station.

Train

The train station is located at Terminal 2 at the airport. The train follows between the airport and the Maçanet-Massanes station every 30 minutes, making stops at the Barcelona Sants, Passeig de Gracia and also at Clot station. Arriving at Terminal 1, passengers can reach Terminal 2 by bus. The launch of the railway connection between Terminal 1 and the Barcelona Sants and Passeig de Gràcia stations is expected by 2020.

Buy airline tickets

It is possible to get to Barcelona by planes of different airlines. As a rule, flights with intermediate stops are the cheapest. Direct flights are the fastest and most convenient, but usually not the cheapest.
