Maslenitsa in Moscow - places to visit

Maslenitsa week in Russia in 2024 will last from March 11 to 17. Main events for the public will be organized on the weekend of March 16 and 17 (2024). The culmination of the holiday is Sunday, March 17th.

What to do and whare to go on Maslenitsa in Moscow? Visit one of the places where folk festivals will take place, try pancakes and (if you wish) take part in the celebration. There will be many fun contests and entertainment on this day. Burning of Lady Maslenitsa doll is the Sunday most notable event.

Maslenitsa, to some extent, can be considered as an analogue of European carnivals. On Maslenitsa Sunday it is customary to have fun.

Immediately after Maslemnitsa, church fasting begins, during which Orthodox Christians limit themselves in many ways (Great Lent, or the Great Fast). Maslenitsa week is the last days before a long period of restrictions, when you can have fun and eat whatever you want.

Non-believers in Russia perceive Maslenitsa as the Festival of the beginning of spring.

Where to go to Maslenitsa in Moscow? Festivities will be organized in many places, in parks and shopping centers. Many parks will prepare a festive program with performances of artists, fun contests, master classes and theatrical performances.

Choose those places where you will be more convenient to get. Come in advance in the morning.

Zaryadye Park. This park has become a popular venue for the free time in recent years. The nearest metro station: Kitay-Gorod.

Revolution square. Revolution square. "Workshop of the Sun" - March 11 – 17, 2024 (12:00-19:45). Masters will teach traditional techniques and offer to paint Maslenitsa toys, kokoshniks and dishes with ornaments depicting the sun.
Metro station: "Ploshchad Revolutsii".

Free tours from the project “Walking around Moscow”. To participate in the tour requires pre-registration. Moscow guided tour can also be bought online.
 
Tverskaya Square. March 11 – 17, 2024 (12:00-18:45). At master classes, participants will learn about the history and traditions of the Maslenitsa holiday in Rus' and make traditional attributes of the celebration with their own hands.

The City of Masters will open on Kamergersky Lane. March 11 – 17, 2024 (12:00-19:45).
You will be able to get acquainted with some traditional crafts. For example: modeling clay figures, making straw Maslenitsa dolls, stamping a pattern on fabric and others.

VDNH. VDNH remains a popular place to spend free time with locals and guests of the Russian capital for many years.
March 17, 2024. Festive program “NeuroMaslenitsa. Metamorphoses." The main action of the show program will take place in two locations: at the Northern Loop venues and at the summer cinema-lecture hall. In the evening, from 17:30 to 21:30, a concert program will take place at the Northern Loop of the Ring Road.
On March 17 at 15:00, VDNKh guests are invited to celebrate Maslenitsa at the Slovo Museum of Slavic Literature!
The nearest metro station VDNH is located at a distance of 500 meters from the main entrance.

Gorky Park.The main events will take place on Saturday and Sunday, March 16 and 17 (2024).

Sparrow Hills. Sparrow Hills is one of the most picturesque and popular places among residents of the city. It is among the places that are recommended to visit in Moscow.
Nearest metro station: "Vorobyovy Gory".

Tsaritsyno. The Maslenitsa program on March 17 will begin at 11:00 on the square near the Grand Palace. At 13:00 there is a festive procession. The festive concert will begin at 14:00.
There will be no burning of the chuchery for fire safety reasons.

Sokolniki Park. Sokolniki Park is the largest park in Moscow. Come here to skate, eat pancakes or just take a walk.

Izmailovsky park. February 25 and 26, 2023. Maslenitsa weekend promises different events for the public. Burning of Maslenitsa effigy is planned at 19:00.
Entrance is paid, by tickets.

Kolomenskoye. You will find here: pancakes, food, souvenirs.
The nearest metro station: Kolomenskaya.

Tsaritsyno. Festivities will be held from 12:00 to 16:00 on Palace Square (in front of the Great Tsaritsyn Palace).
Theatrical performance, rope pulling, fun competitions, folk music. The Tsaritsyno Maslenitsa will be dedicated to Russian folklore. The main events of the week will be held on February 26, 2023. February 26, 13:15-14:00 - Shrovetide procession and round dance.

Maslenitsa (Russian: Масленица, also known as Butter Week, Crepe week, or Cheesefare Week) is an Eastern Slavic folk holiday, celebrated during the last week before Great Lent, the eighth week before Eastern Orthodox Pascha (Easter). Maslenitsa corresponds to the Western Christian Carnival.
