Helsinki Market Square

Helsinki Market Square (Kauppatori) is perhaps the most visited by tourist square of the Helsinki. Square is located in the heart of the city, on the bank of Baltic Sea. From this place depart ferries to the islands Suomenlinna and Korkeasaari (Helsinki Zoo). There are ferry terminals of the Helsinki passenger port near the square.

Presidential Palace, the Swedish Embassy, Helsinki City Hall, the Palace of the Supreme Court are located on the northern edge of the square. To the west of the square is a sculpture Havis Amanda and begins Esplanade Park. “Katajanokkakanava” channel, Katajanokka district and Uspensky Cathedral are located to the east of the square. To the south the “Kauppatori” square is located South Port (Eteläsatama), from which passenger ferries depart to Stockholm and Tallinn.

At the Market Square located an obelisk with a double-headed eagle, established in 1835 in honor of the Empress Alexandra Feodorovna. Emperor Nikolay I and his wife Empress Alexandra Fyodorovna visited Helsinki (Finland) in 1833. It is the oldest monument in Helsinki and one of city attractions.

Market Square is used also for its intended purpose. Sale of fish, fruits and souvenirs is conducted on the market square in Helsinki. There also often organized public events for the residents of the city. Distance from Market Square to the railway station is about 800 meters. The nearest metro station is Kaisaniemi.
