Carnival 2022 - will it take place or not?

Submitted by Visit Plus on Fri, 01/07/2022 - 22:07

Carnivals were among the most popular tourist events. Many travel enthusiasts have planned their trips to the carnival in advance. (We noticed bookings almost a year before the start of the carnival.) Many events were canceled during the pandemic. But we hope that the carnivals will be held in 2022.

  • Carnival in Venice is scheduled to take place from 12 February to 01 March in 2022. (Venice Carnival 2022.)
  • Carnival in Rio de Janeiro is scheduled to take place on February 25 - March 2, 2022.
  • The Santa Cruz de Tenerife Carnival events are slated to run from January 24 to March 1 in 2022.
  • Carnival in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria is scheduled to take place from 25 February to 20 March 2022.
  • February 24 - March 6, 2022 Limassol Carnival. There will be no big events this year, but some small events will take place in Limassol.

Venice Carnivale costume
Venice Carnival. Carnival in Venice differs significantly from other carnivals (for example, in Rio de Janeiro, Germany or the Canary Islands). This carnival is associated with old Venetian traditions and there are no such bright and noisy processions, dancers of samba schools like in Rio.

January 12, 2022. Venice Mayor Luigi Brugnaro announced a few days ago that the 2022 Venice Carnival will take place, as will the Venice Biennale, Boat Show and Venice Film Festival, but much will depend on how the pandemic develops in the coming weeks.

Venice, January 19, 2022. It will definitely not be a massive carnival in Venice this year. There will be no mass events on the square, such as "Flight of an Angel", "Procession of Mary" (in Piazza San Marco). Much attention will be paid to security and compliance checks. These will likely be small events, far from those before Covid. Stay tuned for details in the coming days.

In the Canary Islands, carnivals are traditionally held both on the island of Tenerife and on the island of Gran Canaria.

The Carnival of Santa Cruz de Tenerife is considered the second most popular and world famous carnival after the Carnival in Rio de Janeiro.

Carnival in Rio de Janeiro is considered the largest carnival in the world. The samba parades are the most famous carnival event in Rio de Janeiro.

On January 4, Rio de Janeiro's mayor's office made an important decision about Carnival 2022: there will be no street celebration, street events, carnival platforms on the streets of Rio in 2022. (In 2021, events were not carried out due to the pandemic, and the situation will repeat in 2022, due to the recent increase in the incidence.)

The widespread adoption of vaccinations has given us hope (or even confidence) of a return to normalcy. But as the omicron variant became dominant, infections increased again, and it is possible that the planned activities could be canceled or rescheduled. Whether there will be carnivals this year is still unknown.
