Forecast - tourism will exceed pre-pandemic levels in the southern islands of the Aegean Sea in Greece
It is of interest to many of us whether tourism will recover to pre-pandemic 2019 levels this summer or not? As for Greece, the forecasts are quite optimistic.
According to information published in the Greek media, the islands of Rhodes, Kos, Mykonos and Santorini, popular with tourists, received more arrivals in June 2022 compared to 2019. Rhodes is the most popular of this group of islands.
What does this mean for us travel lovers?
- We are very happy that tourism is recovering!
- We need to hurry up with the booking if we plan to go on holiday to Greece this summer!
You can now travel by ferry between Greece and Cyprus
Maritime passenger traffic has resumed between Greece and Cyprus. Ferry traffic was interrupted 21 years ago. Passenger ferry Daleela of Scandro Holding began operating between Piraeus Port in Greece and Limassol (Cyprus) on June 19, 2022.
The journey from Limassol to the port of Piraeus takes 30 hours by ferry. The ferry will only run in the summer for now. This season, flights are scheduled until September 16: four flights in June, eight in July, seven in August and three in September.
The port of Piraeus is located near the city of Athens.
Greece will support domestic tourism. International visitors are also welcome.
Greece aims to be the number one holiday destination in Europe in the summer and fall of 2022. Domestic tourism will also be supported. The state program to support domestic tourism "Tourism for All" ("Τουρισμός για Όλους") has been prepared in Greece. The program aims to support low-income Greek families and tourism businesses. The program has a volume of 30 million euros and is funded by the National Development Program. Greece's domestic tourism support program uses Freedom Pass, providing a completely digital process without bureaucratic complexities.
Tourism feels better than in 2021, but the number of visits to the resorts of Northern Greece is not yet up to the level of 2019. At the same time, there are a lot of bookings on the southern islands of Greece.
Where are you going on vacation this year? Back to Rhodes!
There are people who strive to see new places on every vacation.
And there are those who, year after year, return to where they like it.
In April, in Rhodes (Greece), honorary distinctions were presented to four guests from Denmark, who come to Rhodes more than 30 times. But the record was set by Mrs. Jane Vincent Jensen, who loves the island, came to Rhodes 150 times in the last 40 years! And why look for another vacation spot if you have already found one that suits you completely?
Airports of Heraklion and Chania serve tourists from different countries
Crete has two airports that cater to holidaymakers arriving on the island: Heraklion International Airport and Chania Airport.
At the beginning of the 2022 tourist season, tourists from the UK, Germany, Finland, Denmark, Sweden, Poland and Belgium most often arrived at Chania Airport. At the same tourists from Germany, Great Britain, France, the Netherlands, Switzerland and Belgium most often land at Heraklion airport this season.
A lot of tourists are expected in Crete, but the income of hoteliers is at risk
Many vacationers are expected in the summer of 2022 in Crete in Greece. Forecasts show that in May the number of tourists can reach the level of 2019.
But every country needs tourists for business, profit, and there are some problems with this. Tourist income is supposed to be good, but the costs will be huge due to rising prices.
Also of concern to hotel owners is the fact that many tourists use short-term rental housing, apartments and houses, both legal and illegal.
Summer holiday season starts well in Greece
Tourism is actively recovering in Greece. The number of tourist arrivals in the first two weeks of May even exceeded the figures recorded for the corresponding period in 2019.
The total number of international arrivals at the five largest airports in the South Aegean this year gives reason for optimism. The airports of Mykonos, Rhodes, Santorini, Kos and Karpathos served more than two hundred and forty thousand passengers from May 1 to May 15, 2022, which is more than in the corresponding period of 2019. A lot of vacationers are expected on the island of Crete this summer.
